Welcome to geodesic arts, an organisation formed specially to bring together the diverse and complementary skills of its founding members Kirsty Halliday (Arts Management), Mark Hildred (Technical Production and Realisation) and Damian Murphy (Artist and Researcher in the field of sound and music computing).
Kirsty, Mark and Damian have worked together previously as part of Sightsonic, York's festival of digital art, and Mark and Damian have collaborated on a number of projects including the very well received sound and light installation, A Sense of Place, exploring and interpreting aspects of York's history, archaeological and architectural heritage.
The core team are privileged to welcome geodesicArts' first associate members: archaeologist and video artist, John Oxley; and photographer Kippa Matthews.
Me,
Myself and MRI - Project Launch
geodesicArts are delighted to announce the launch of Me, Myself and MRI a 2-year science and art project, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England.
The project team, consisting of Kirsty Halliday (project manager), Mark Hildred (technical producer) and Damian Murphy (lead artist), have worked with secondary school pupils at Archbishop Holgate's School, York and artists John Oxley (video) and Kippa Matthews (photography) towards the creation of a touring exhibition of contemporary digital portraiture.
The artworks use video, audio and photographic source material, together with fascinating, beautiful and detailed graphics obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scans to explore the perception and presentation of self for six specially selected subjects.
As well as the main artistic outcomes, the project has been designed to educate, explore and research the issues surrounding the focus of this work. The school group have learnt about the history of medical imaging and how contemporary techniques, such as MRI, fMRI and MEG are used on a day-to-day basis in modern medicine. The relationship between medical imaging, portraiture as an art-form and the development of the concept of the individual in society have been explored, as have the ethics of scientific research and contemporary art. The learning resources prepared as part of the project will be made more widely available following the laucnh of the exhibition via the National Science Learning Centre online resources portal.
The exhibition launched at the National Science Learning Centre in February 2009 before embarking on a tour to other regional venues.
The Me Myself and MRI website was also launched to coincide with the opening.
geodesicArts have realised this project in collaboration with partners at the York Neuroimaging Centre, Archbishop Holgate's School and the National Science Learning Centre.
